Hamda | Data Engineering
Hamda graduated from Generation’s Data Engineering bootcamp in London in January 2023. She is now employed by Macquarie as a Junior Data Engineer.
Before finding Generation, Hamda was unemployed following graduating from a degree in chemistry. Keen to move into the tech sector but lacking the support networks to help her make the move, she found herself scouring the internet for suitable opportunities. In her own words:
“I was in a position where I had some skills that would be transferable but not quite the right skill set in order to get a graduate role in the tech sector – I felt the need to upskill myself. I come from a low socio-economic background so I was hesitant to take on a masters due to the financial impact of that and also having to take another year before realising any kind of earning potential. I couldn’t even find part time work. I was having a really tough time that whole summer.”
Hamda found great value in participating in Generation’s Data Engineering bootcamp, including the willingness of the instructors and peers to help each other and enable everyone to succeed. She sites the growth mindset sessions as the most impactful:
“Before the course I was a bit critical of myself, a bit overly critical, judging myself for where I was at that moment rather than focusing on what I can do to improve.”
After graduating from the bootcamp, Hamda interviewed with one of Generation’s employer partners – Macquarie – and is now 7 months into her role as a Junior Data Engineer which she is enjoying.
“My team is very open minded and helpful, so I feel like I’m at a really good company where I can continue to grow and learn.”
Hamda also cites strong impact on her personal life:
“There are major mental health benefits in having the certainty of job security. And having access to a regular income means you can start to plan for the future. I’ve been able to take agency in my life in a way that I hadn’t before.”
