Codie’s Story: Building a Sustainable Future for Herself and Her Community

Codie (31) took part in Generation’s Sustainability Project Officer bootcamp in Manchester in 2025. Beforehand, she had been working closely with an employment counsellor to find her next career move—something that aligned with her passion for sustainability. Despite her enthusiasm, she struggled to find a way into the sector without the right qualifications.

“I’d been looking at everything from sustainability officer roles to waste management, but without formal training, I was getting nowhere. I didn’t just want another job—I wanted a career I could grow in.”

When her job centre work coach sent her a link to Generation’s Sustainability Project Officer programme, it felt like the perfect match. Despite juggling parenthood and financial responsibilities, she found a way to make it work by picking up a part-time role at B&M while completing the course.

Codie thrived in the technical side of the course, on a curriculum co-designed with employers to teach the skills they need from entry level staff in retrofit. It wasn’t always easy—balancing studies, part-time work, and raising a toddler—but she stayed committed.

“The workload was tough, but I loved learning. The ‘little and often’ approach helped me manage everything, even during the busiest weeks.”

Beyond technical skills, the bootcamp helped her build a strong professional identity.

“The employability side of the course was so valuable. My CV stood out in a huge pool of applicants—my new employer even commented on it. And when I met my manager, a Retrofit Coordinator, he was impressed that I already understood his role in line with PAS2035. That moment really boosted my confidence.”

Codie credits her success to the incredible support of instructors and mentors throughout.

“They were experts in their field and so helpful. My employability coach gave me the confidence I needed for interviews. The support was just incredible.”

Codie secured a role after her first interview upon graduation as a Trainee Retrofit Assessor for Green Grant Installs, where she visits homes across Manchester to conduct energy efficiency reports. This is work that’s helping the council determine where upgrades are most needed. She’s also training to become a qualified Energy Assessor, with the company covering all costs.

“Every day is different. I love the variety, and my colleagues have been so welcoming. My trainer explains things in a way that makes sense to me. It feels like I’ve found my place.

It feels amazing to make a difference in people’s daily lives.”

Codie’s career is already progressing, with a pay rise lined up as soon as she completes her training. But it’s the deeper personal transformation that’s left the biggest mark.

“Financially, it’s been life-changing. My first wage was double what I received on benefits. I’m now able to start saving for my child’s future and think about moving to a better area.”

I wake up excited every day. I’ve never felt like this about a job before. I finally feel like I’m building something for myself and my child. Generation gave me that.”
