Dahlia | Healthcare Assistant

After moving from Jamaica to the UK, Dahlia was determined to follow her lifelong passion for healthcare. Despite her years of clerical work at a college in Jamaica—and a deep love of helping others—employers wanted qualifications.

“When I came to the UK, I started applying for jobs in healthcare right away—even though I had no qualifications in the field. I was relying on the experience I had caring for friends and loved ones, but it wasn’t enough. I realised I needed proper training to move forward.”

That’s when Dahlia found Generation. She applied to the Healthcare Assistant programme and joined the bootcamp in September 2024.

“Every part of the programme helped me grow. I was especially interested in learning about mental health and learning disabilities, and I found the sessions on CV writing and interview prep incredibly helpful. The most emotional part was learning about different types of abuse—but it made me more prepared for real-life care work.”

Since graduating, Dahlia has started working as an Enhanced Patient Observer on the Major Trauma Ward at St Mary’s Hospital in London. Her role includes 1:1 or cohort care, monitoring patient observations, supporting with personal care, transporting patients for procedures, and ensuring a clean and safe environment.

“I love going to work and serving my patients. My team is supportive and we work together to give patients the best care possible. This role is the first step on my path to becoming a nurse, and now I can see that goal clearly.”

Gaining employment has had a significant impact on Dahlia’s life. She now supports her children in Jamaica—including her daughter, who is studying medicine—and contributes to her church’s children’s ministry and international outreach work.

“Gaining financial independence here in the UK has positively impacted my mental health, happiness and my future aspirations.

The programme didn’t just help me find a job. It gave me financial stability, improved my mental health, and helped me build a support network. My future feels brighter now. I’m walking toward my purpose and my destiny.”
