Lee’s Journey to a Role in Data
Lee (26) took part in Generation’s Data Analytics bootcamp in London in 2024. Before joining the bootcamp, Lee was struggling to secure a role in Data with no guidance on how to kick start her career.
“I grew up in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area of London.
I had no-one to guide me through securing a corporate role. I knew I wanted to become an analyst, but I didn’t know how to get there.”
During the Data Analytics bootcamp Lee learnt the technical skills required for a role in data and improved her employability skills to prepare her for the workplace.
“Learning technical skills such as SQL, Python, Power BI and having the opportunity to gain a Microsoft certificate, along with learning about what employers look out for, gave me the confidence to start applying for opportunities.
I would like to emphasise how useful the soft skills and interview preparation was for me. One thing that I always keep in mind from the programme is the explanation of what it means to have a growth mindset, it’s something that keeps me motivated.
I went from panicking about the future and having no clue what to do, to feeling like I could do it.“
After graduating, Lee secured a role after her first interview as an Associate Data Analyst with Generation’s employer partner The Dot Collective.
“The project I’m on at the moment is replatforming some data to create new reporting functionalities. I am heavily involved in understanding the current product and transferring that knowledge to the future solution, creating source to target mappings, DQ analysis, stored procedure lineages, and supporting on modelling for the new data mart.”
The Generation bootcamp has been transformative for Lee, allowing her to look forward and plan for her future.
“I have some financial goals and would like to get onto the property ladder. I’d also like to create more through art and poetry. I think it’s important to slow down and enjoy just being.
Ultimately, Generation taught me to have confidence in my capabilities. They provided me with the tools and understanding on how to get a job in Data and maintain it.”
