Lucy
Lucy is an IT Support graduate. She took part in the bootcamp in Scotland and graduated in August 2022. Lucy left school at 16 and started engaging with the Prince’s Trust which enabled her to get a retail job. After the funding ran out, she became unemployed however continued to do soft skills courses through the Prince’s Trust. Before the Generation bootcamp, she felt she had a lack of employability support at school and in her home life which she identified as her main barrier to employment.
“I joined the bootcamp as I thought it looked like a great opportunity to gain new skills, plus I am interested in the IT field so I saw it as a good starting point. I also wanted the support around CVs, cover letters and interview prep as I didn’t know how to impress employers.
I was excited to practice customer calls and emails as it was a chance to see how I react to different types of customers and how to properly deal with these types of interactions.
I was scared about the tests with IT scenarios to fix because I knew barely anything about IT and computers, but once I got started it turned out there was video tutorials and info sheets and it ended up being so much fun.
[The bootcamp] has helped me with having the confidence to talk in front of a group of strangers.
Now, I am working as a Desktop Support Assistant for Forestry and Land Scotland. [In this role] I communicate with customers and give them support with tech issues. I acquired this role after graduating from Generation, I also got the skills for this role from Generation.
If you’re looking for experience, a job, support on job searching and a chance to learn about IT, then this bootcamp is a brilliant opportunity and it’s a great start to get you into the industry!”
