Mary’s Inspirational Path to a Career in IT Support

Mary (age 50, Glasgow) took part in Generation’s IT Support bootcamp in August 2024. Before joining the programme Mary worked in various zero-hour contract roles and was struggling to secure a permanent position. This affected her confidence in her ability to get a job in a field she was passionate about.

“I was unemployed for 5 years before the bootcamp. I applied for various jobs but was never shortlisted for an interview.

Then, I found out about the Generation bootcamp through a Scottish Refugee Council vacancy and training email that was sent to me.”

During the IT Support bootcamp Mary learnt the technical skills required for a role in tech and improved her communication skills to prepare her for the workplace. The most impactful things Mary recalls gaining from the bootcamp were increased self-confidence and a positive mindset.

“The Generation bootcamp has helped me be more confident in myself, and given me the confidence that the only thing between you and your success is your ability to have a positive mindset.”

After graduation, Mary gained a role with one of Generation’s employer partners, Getronics, as a Service Desk Analyst.

“In my new role, the support from my colleagues is phenomenal. I’m excited about my future in this company as I am already learning new IT skills and I know that career growth is most certain.”

The Generation bootcamp has had a huge impact on Mary’s life, giving her more stability and improving her mental health and relationships.

“Gaining employment has boosted my self confidence and has helped me gain financial independence. It has also improved my mental health and relationships with my friends.”
