Saad’s journey breaking into the UK Tech Industry
Before joining Generation, Saad (32) was working as a Sales Assistant at a petrol station in Glasgow, while trying to transition into the IT field. Although he had worked in IT when he lived in Pakistan, breaking into the UK job market proved challenging.
“Even though I had the knowledge, I struggled to secure a role due to a lack of UK-based experience. The biggest challenge was getting my foot in the door.”
Despite his technical foundation and motivation, Saad found it difficult to demonstrate his skills to employers and access relevant opportunities. This barrier began to impact both his career progression and confidence. That changed when he enrolled in Generation’s IT Support with Cyber Security bootcamp.
“The Generation bootcamp played a key role in my personal and professional development. It significantly improved my communication, confidence, and how I present myself to employers.”
Through the programme, Saad developed essential employability skills, including tailoring his CV, approaching employers, and performing strongly in interviews.
“The mock interviews were especially helpful, as they boosted my confidence and allowed me to practice in a realistic setting.”
As part of Generation’s corporate volunteering programme, these mock interviews are delivered by industry professionals who bring real-world insight and provide meaningful, personalised feedback to learners.
Shortly after graduating from the IT bootcamp in February 2025, Saad secured a role as a Service Desk Engineer at Voice Technologies. In his role, he provides second line support to clients across multiple NHS sites across England and Scotland.
“I genuinely enjoy my role and feel confident in my ability to perform well and add value. I particularly enjoy the problem-solving aspect, as it allows me to use my technical skills to troubleshoot and resolve issues every day.”
Saad has quickly adapted to the role, benefiting from a supportive team environment and opportunities to continue learning on the job. He is excited to deepen his technical expertise and take on new challenges as his career progresses. The impact of securing this role has been transformative.
“Gaining employment as a Service Desk Engineer has completely changed my situation. I now have financial stability, I can plan for the future, and better support my family. It’s also had a very positive impact on my mental well-being. I feel more motivated and valued in my work.”
