Stephen | Sustainability Project Officer
Rebuilding confidence and finding purpose in Sustainability
Before joining Generation, Stephen (aged 36, from Scotland) had spent several years out of work. After a career in hospitality, he experienced a prolonged period of unemployment and homelessness, making it increasingly difficult to imagine returning to employment.
“My mental health had been in a very poor state, with depression and at times crippling social anxiety making the job search exhausting. I had become completely despondent, and felt too old and without experience or recent work history to get me back into something rewarding.”
Not long after securing social housing, Stephen came across Generation’s Sustainability Project Officer bootcamp in Glasgow. The opportunity came at a time when he was ready to explore a new career.
In addition to all the technical knowledge he acquired, the programme gave Stephen an opportunity to rebuild his confidence.
“The programme helped me regain confidence and self-worth! The routine in a professional but relaxed environment showed me I had something to offer and I was capable of showing up and making valuable contributions.”
Learning alongside other like-minded people, in a supportive learning environment, helped Stephen believe in his ability to build a new career.
Shortly after graduating in February 2026, Stephen secured a role as an Energy Advisor with a housing association. In his role, Stephen helps tenants reduce their energy consumption and access the most suitable energy tariffs. He also oversees metering for vacant properties and supports the wider housing team with a range of day-to-day enquiries. As part of a partnership project, he is also looking forward to supporting the rollout of new solar PV installations.
“I most enjoy meeting our tenants and hearing their stories, and being that person that listens.”
The role has brought new challenges and opportunities for growth. As the first person to provide this service within his organisation, Stephen has been responsible for helping build it from the ground up.
After years of uncertainty, one of the biggest changes has simply been returning to a stable routine.
“Having come from shift work, it is great to have a steady routine, and just even to be back in work – which I wasn’t sure if it would ever happen.”
The impact of employment has extended far beyond his career.
“It has transformed my life. I’m saving, reducing debt, investing in myself through physical training and therapy. I can buy new clothes and gifts for my son and friends. I can go for a coffee without thinking twice.”
For the first time in years, Stephen feels he has choices and opportunities ahead of him. While he’s still deciding exactly where his career will lead next, Stephen now has clear pathways open to him and the confidence to pursue them.
“Gaining employment has brought me freedom.”
