Taylor | IT Support
Re-entering the workforce after long term unemployment
Before joining Generation, Taylor (23) was between jobs and actively searching for work, facing a challenge that many jobseekers find difficult to navigate – explaining a long gap in employment.
“The biggest struggle for me was explaining the gap in my CV, especially with it being two and a half years since my previous job.”
Despite being motivated to find work, this barrier made it harder to move forward with confidence. Taylor was looking for a way to demonstrate commitment, rebuild momentum, and gain new skills.
This was his motivation to enrol in Generation’s IT Support with Cyber Security bootcamp in Leeds.
Gaining Skills and Confidence
Through the programme, Taylor developed both technical knowledge and the confidence to communicate more effectively in professional settings.
“The bootcamp helped me show employers that I’m still looking to improve myself, as well as giving me valuable insights into how computers work beyond just everyday use.”
Beyond technical learning, the experience supported a significant personal transformation.
“I’ve never been much of a talker, but I’m a lot more confident in making my voice heard now, and in asking questions. Probably more questions than necessary!”
Interactive elements of the bootcamp, such as mock customer call scenarios, played an important role in building Taylor’s confidence to speak up and engage with others.
“This was probably because of the mock customer calling scenarios we did. They were really helpful and a lot of fun once I got the hang of them.”
Starting a New Chapter
After completing the bootcamp in June 2025, Taylor secured a role as an IT Officer at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT).
In his role, he manages and maintains the hardware and software for the Cellular Pathology department, ensuring critical systems run smoothly. This includes troubleshooting Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) as well as resolving general IT issues. He is also playing a direct role in implementing a new LIMS system, WinPath, contributing to the ongoing development of digital infrastructure within the department.
“I enjoy the nature of my role as I get to see the whole diagnostics process for tissue samples. The team is tight-knit, welcoming, and friendly, and there are lots of opportunities to progress.”
Now part of a supportive team, Taylor is continuing to grow in confidence while gaining exposure to how IT supports critical healthcare services.
“I’m excited to see how the department continues using IT in the future.”
A Lasting Impact
Since starting work, the change has extended well beyond employment.
“Since I’ve been employed, it’s like I’m a whole new person. I’m a lot more confident, more outgoing, and I’ve even improved my overall wellbeing.”
Where Taylor once found it difficult to engage with new people, he now feels comfortable connecting with colleagues across the department and beyond.
“In the past I wouldn’t really speak to people I didn’t know, but now I know basically everyone in the department, and even people from other areas of the hospital.”
For Taylor, this step into work has brought greater confidence, new skills, and a stronger sense of belonging.
