Wesley | Sustainability Project Officer

Wesley’s journey to a career in the Green Sector

Wesley (age 24, London) took part in Generation’s Sustainability Project Officer bootcamp in May 2024. Before joining the programme Wesley was unemployed and, with no prior work experience, was unsure where to begin when looking to start his career.

“I had no concept of understanding my skills and working towards them. I just had a vague feeling that I wanted to help people.

I was looking for funded options that could help me progress in my Retrofit journey, and Generation was the only funded option I could find in London. I was eager to join and learn as much as possible.”

During the bootcamp, Wesley learnt the technical skills required for a career in the Green Sector and improved his interview and CV writing skills to prepare him for job applications. He also developed greater self-confidence and a readiness to step outside of his comfort zone.

“The bootcamp has allowed me to understand and highlight my skills and how to use them to my advantage.

I feel more comfortable in interviews, how to prep for them and in general feeling more comfortable as an individual and having more of a willingness to go on adventures. I feel more certain about myself and my decisions.”

After graduating, Wesley secured a role as a Trainee Energy Advisor at Citizens Advice. He has since been promoted to Energy Advisor, where he supports clients in various ways relating to their energy needs.

“I enjoy my work culture and the general work approach we take with clients and each other. I also enjoy the support for growth and a healthy working environment.”

The Generation bootcamp has had a huge impact on Wesley’s life, giving him more financial stability and making him self-confident to begin his future.

“I’m now in a financial position I have never been in before. I can save up and look forward to travelling and trying new things. I feel happier, and this whole experience has lit a fire in me. My experience at Generation has also motivated  me to volunteer at FoodCycle.

I’m excited for the journey and not just the end goal. I am excited to think about how much I will grow and feel more capable of handling life’s ups and downs.”
