Who we seek to serve

On a Generation bootcamp learners will be taught the technical, employability, and soft skills (behavioural and mindset) that they need to be successful in an entry-level profession within their chosen profession.

Our mission is to prepare, place, and support people into life-changing careers that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. Our programmes and support model are most suitable for learners who need our support, who we are able to support, and who will benefit from our support.

Who needs our support

We have identified common themes that create barriers for individuals when trying to find meaningful employment – applications from people facing these barriers are prioritised as part of our admissions process.

Themes identified include low educational attainment, long-term unemployment (6+ months), those from the global majority (sometimes called ethnic minorities in the UK & Ireland), those who are LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities, learning differences, and health issues (mental and physical). We also seek to prioritise women for our tech programmes, and across all programmes particularly welcome learners who are under 35.

Who we are able to support

Inclusion

We are committed to creating opportunities for people facing barriers to employment, this includes actively seeking to serve individuals with disabilities, learning differences, and mental/physical health challenges.

In the UK, we operate in line with the Equality Act (2010), and in Ireland, we comply with the Employment Equality Acts and Equal Status Acts. To ensure an inclusive learning experience, we work closely with learners to create an Inclusion Register, which guides our Instructors and Learner Support Staff in making the reasonable adjustments needed for success on programme.

While we strive to accommodate as many learners as possible, there are some circumstances where we are unable to adjust our teaching. For example, our bootcamps run from 9am to 5pm, and we require learners to attend class with cameras on as our classrooms are currently online. Though we cannot provide regular one-on-one support, we’ve successfully supported learners with hearing or vision impairments by utilising tools like transcripts and adaptive computer settings. However, we do not have access to sign language interpreters or Braille resources at this time.

In some circumstances, applicants may be rejected if their circumstances would prevent them from thriving in the end-role for the chosen programme.

English Competency Policy

We welcome applicants who are ready to learn in English and provide support for those who need help with language skills. Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) support is available to help learners achieve the level of fluency required for the workplace.

For most of our bootcamps, you’ll need a B2, C1, or C2 level of English based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. As a guideline, if you can read, listen and watch the news in English and understand it almost fully without frequent pauses, you’re likely to thrive with us.

If you’re still building your fluency, we’ll help you along the way with resources like BKSB learning software. If you’re not yet at the required level, we recommend exploring free ESOL training near you to help prepare you to join us in the future.

Childcare or care for other family members:
Our learning hours are full-time 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, our programmes are intensive and take place live on the day meaning individuals need to be fully present for the duration of the programme. We are unable to responsibly serve people who do not have suitable childcare or family care in place for these hours. It will not be possible for individuals to look after young children or other people who require personal care during bootcamp hours.

Willingness to commit to a full-time in-person end role:
The majority of the roles with our employer partners and in the sectors we train for are full-time and require in-person work. We typically do not serve individuals looking for part-time work or those who will only accept remote roles at the end of a programme. Our Inclusion Team will work with individuals who have disabilities or other conditions that mean they are entitled to reasonable adjustments. A reasonable adjustment for such individuals may well include flexible working or some work from home. We are very happy to support applicants where the adjustments required can be reasonably asked of employers.

Unspent convictions:
We are able to serve people who have convictions that will be spent by the time a bootcamp graduates. If you do have a conviction, you can use this calculator to see the date by which it will be spent. We ask individuals to share details of any criminal convictions to enable us to support individuals appropriately throughout the programme and into the placement phase. This helps us to provide the right support, keep our classrooms safe and help individuals to apply for suitable end roles. Where an applicant shares with us that they have spent time in prison, our Inclusion staff will meet with that person to check that we are able to serve them appropriately. We are not able to serve people who have been convicted of sexual offences and we have a duty to make sure that our classrooms are safe environments.

Individuals currently engaged in part-time work:

Our bootcamps involve intensive full-time learning Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, managing a full-time programme with over 15 hours of work per week may lead to over-work and possible burnout, this can have a negative impact on an individual’s wellbeing as well as their ability to learn during programme hours. We recognise that individuals may need to work these hours and may be able to find a good balance.

Housing Stability:
Our bootcamps involve intensive full-time work Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. This learning environment will be challenging to work in if you are experiencing some form of housing instability.

Who will benefit from our support

Our bootcamps are designed for individuals who have no prior education or work experience in the field taught on programme. We typically do not serve individuals who have undertaken higher or further education/certification in a subject that is close to the bootcamp or, have previous work experience in this field as the learning content is likely to be disengaging for these individuals.

Additionally, individuals who have worked in a professional sector at an intermediate or management level are less likely to benefit from our support, the employability and soft skills training provided is designed for entry-level roles and individuals with limited work experience.

On an individual basis we may serve applicants who have relocated from overseas and have relevant education/training or professional experience in the field. We serve such applicants where they have encountered barriers to entering the sector in the UK. These applicants will benefit from our employability and soft skills training. Successful applicants would demonstrate that they would be committed to supporting less technical peers and also prepared to undertake individual learning separate from whole-class teaching where the content is too simple for them.

Flair

AWS re/Start programme

“I’m on a good path. There’s a lot of room for progression. I work with fascinating people. And I actually have enough money to save and invest. God willing, within the next two years, myself and my husband are looking to buy a house.”

Nakai

AWS re/Start programme

“The AWS re/Start programme offered me a way to launch a career in the booming technology industry without any prior tech experience which was a real dream come true. The curriculum not only focused on teaching core tech skills, but also the key soft skills and behavioral mindsets needed to thrive which differentiated it from other bootcamps.”

Taishan

Data Engineering Programme

“I wanted to start a career in tech but found it difficult to find places given my lack of experience, and when I came across the Generation course, I knew it’d be a perfect opportunity.”

Jacob

Data Engineering Programme

“For anyone considering applying to a Generation Bootcamp, I’d say, Go for it! Don’t worry if you don’t feel qualified – the whole point of training programmes like this is to help people who aren’t qualified yet. As long as you’re willing to work hard you will learn a lot of new skills, and everyone around you will help you through any difficulties you face.”

Hassan

IT Support Programme

“Generation changed my life and made me a better person. The tutors were amazing, they made me feel comfortable and supported me so much, I can’t thank them enough”

Mohigul

Sustainability Project Officer Programme

“When I first found Generation I thought it wasn’t real, I thought it was a scam because it was on social media. They’re an amazing team who support with everything”

Is there an age limit to apply?

The minimum age can differ between programme and region. The absolute minimum age is 18 years, however some programmes may specify 19+ years as at August 31st of a specific year. Please make sure to check the requirements on the programme page on the website to be sure. We do not currently hold an upper age limit for applying.

Our bootcamps are online instructor-led classes which are held via Zoom. The duration varies per bootcamp, however are full-time, Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm, unless specified otherwise, and we would need you to be available for the duration.
